The Chevrolet Express Passenger Van comes in 1500 Series, 2500 Series and heavy-duty 3500 Series models, with the 2500 and 3500 models carrying higher overall weight ratings. There are also regular (135-inch) and extended (155-inch) wheelbase versions, with seating space for eight, 12 or 15 people. Towing is also a strength for the Express Van models, with trailer ratings ranging up to 9,900 pounds.
There are four different engines offered in the Express vans. Most of these vans come standard either with a 4.8L V8 that makes 280 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, or a 5.3L V8 making 310 hp and 334 lb-ft. Separately, there's a flex-fuel version of the 5.3L than can run on a fuel mix of 85 percent ethanol. And for those needing the most hauling power in a gasoline engine, the top 6.0L V8 makes 324 hp and 373 lb-ft. Across the entire lineup, you get a 31-gallon fuel tank.
On some models, you can opt for a Duramax turbo-diesel V8 engine that makes 260 hp and a tow-friendly 525 pound-feet of torque. The engine comes with a diesel particulate filter system and can start in temperatures as low as -20 degrees F without an engine block heater.
Base 1500 models get a 4-speed automatic transmission, while 2500 and 3500 models come with a heavy-duty 6-speed automatic. All-wheel drive is available in some 1500 models with the 5.3L V8, providing better traction and greater confidence on snowy or slick conditions.
The Express has true body-on-frame truck construction, with a ladder-type frame plus tubular cross members for better torsional stiffness and tapered frame rails for safety. It rides on an independent front suspension and rear leaf-spring suspension, with a stabilizer bar in front and a locking rear differential available on all models. Express 1500 models come with a responsive power rack-and-pinion steering system, while the others get a recirculating-ball steering gear. And in all Express vans, 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with dynamic rear proportioning adapt to loads and provide secure stops. GM's StabiliTrak electronic stability control also helps provide safety and prevent skids in sudden maneuvers, while all models include driver and front passenger air bags.
Each of the Express grades--1500, 2500 and 3500--is offered in LS and LT models. Standard equipment on all of them includes air conditioning, auxiliary power outlets, a driver information center, and an AM/FM radio, while LT models step up to rear air conditioning, a rear auxiliary heater, remote keyless entry and power windows. Options include 6-way power-adjustable driver and passenger seats, remote start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls and an improved audio system with CD and MP3 capability and a USB port. In all models there's a choice between vinyl and cloth upholstery, in either Neutral or Medium Pewter colors.
Newly optional for 2013 are a navigation radio, rear vision camera and ultrasonic rear park assist, with the rear vision view shown on the rearview mirror. A navigation radio system is also optional.
3500 models include various other upgrades, such as a higher-capacity battery and alternator, as well as a heavy-duty transmission with external oil cooler.
Chevrolet has added a rear vision camera, rear park assist and a navigation radio to the Chevy Express Passenger Van's options list for 2013.
